For the future heroes of our country and U.S. civilians, military bases are important landmarks of our country’s independence and defense. They are a testament to the meticulous and rigorous training of the brave individuals who risk their lives for our freedom.
Fort Novosel is an Army base in Ozark, Alabama, and provides enlisters with a hub for premier U.S. Army Aviation training. The base also offers educational opportunities for visitors. The Fort has changed a bit over the last few years, so we’re going to cover the ins and outs of the base as it stands today.
Fort Novosel, formerly known as Fort Rucker, was a product of World War II. During WWII, the United States began creating training camps and military bases to strengthen their mobility and power, resulting in the development of Fort Novosel.
In 1955, the Army Aviation Center was officially established at the base and the name was changed from Camp Rucker to Fort Rucker. It was named after Confederate Army Colonel Edmund W. Rucker. The base was redesignated as Fort Novosel in 2023 as an effort to rename installations that were named after Confederate leaders.
The main draw to the museum is the large collection of helicopters and aircraft, one of the biggest in the world. The museum showcases the history of Army Aviation including a replica of the B-model Military Flyer built by the Wright Brothers and the latest in helicopter technology.
Visitors can explore the base's museums and historical exhibits, showcasing nearly four thousand items in the historical property collection. The museum reference library has a treasure trove of resources including more than 1,000 field manuals, more than 2,000 films, and about 95,000 photographs. The U.S. Army Aviation Museum is perfect for history buffs who want to dive in head-first into our Nation’s aviation.
For thousands of brave individuals, Fort Novosel is their home for 12-18 months, dedicating themselves in service to our country. Just like any U.S. military base, Fort Novosel operates much like a small town, including community centers, dining options, and a post office. While Fort Novosel has a cozy feel to it, many students venture outside the base to explore the surrounding area.

With this option, you’re never very far from the base but still have the freedom to explore the outdoors. There are pros and cons to living on base and off, and the decision largely comes down to personal preferences and budget.
